I'm starting to think that Google's search dominance isn't a result of a better product (though there are still some advantages, in some areas, to choosing it over Bing, and vice-a-versa) but of ingrained human behavior. Human behavior that takes years, decades to counter. It's going to be a long, grueling fight. The good news is there is another big dog in the game, and that will make competing search products better. Go competition.

Altough on the bright side, it seems bing is doing better on the breaking news stuff after the MJ issues. A quick search of muni crash (the San Fran public transportation) brings up some news articles about it.

Unfortanuetely for MS, little improvements like that wont bring large marketshare gains. Hopefully the Yahoo deals works out positively for both MS and Yahoo

You have to look at the "pointless stories" differently.

Even though the features aren't "new" they are part of the buzz. Just because the features were there with Live, replacing them with Bing is enough to say they are "new" and gives Microsoft another thing to say, "HEY! LOOK AT ME!".

Interesting news, lets hope they're not just rumors again...

Oh, and kudos to you guys for not writing pointless stories about the buzz around bing. As you pointed out in an earlier post, a lot stories have been about "new" features in bing which were available in Live search, and that you had covered earlier.

Thanks, Kip. It'll be nice to know for sure what we can expect in the future. I really hope we do get given the same features as the US preview version.

@JohnCz - I'll agree with all of your points, if we get given the features which were advertised to us all on the DiscoverBing website and which didn't state they were US-only :)

Kip, I think you struck a very balanced tone in your report...many reasons to be optimistic but also a doze of skeptism due to past performance. I don't know how you all see things but I believe Microsoft has done a pretty good job in righting its ship. So I can only offer encouragement. If they continue to execute they way they have for the last 6 months or so, I can imagine them possibly coming out this recession with an even stronger "consumer" brand.

I'm really looking forward to Windows Live 'wave 4', now I've heard they're bringing together the desktop software, similar to how they did with the online services.

I have a question about the Bing issue raised here - do you know why some countries have the beta version rather than the full-fledged preview which the United States have? I was extremely disappointed when I checked out Bing today to find that not only do we not have a lot of the features, we don't even have that 'Explore' sidebar on the homepage of Bing :| All of the links to different search types are still above the search box - that's what is annoying me at the moment to be honest, but I'd also like the features we were promised by Microsoft :) No where on the DiscoverBing site did I see it say all these new innovative features were going to be US only :(

Bing is a terrible name. Live Search as a brand was fine. Ding would have been slightly less terrible than Bing, but they both suck. Google will continue to destroy "Bing" if that is the final name.

Honestly, these names sound weak. I guess Bing sounds better than Kumo, but not much better.

Live Search is already a fine brand name. People have gotten used to it. It just needs better algorithm and features to compete with Google.

I could still come up with better alternatives to Kumo and Bing though.Anyone have a better name?

Bing.it would be an interesting one too, so long as Microsoft was willing to sacrifice their Italy domain a little bit.
