This approach will NOT work on Windows Home Server. The files on d:\shares may not be actual files. In systems with more than one drive, files on d:\shares are likely tombstones (4k files that represent files stores on other drives). The only way to read/write to the shared folders on WHS is via the file shares which uses the Driver Extender. Because Live Mesh does not work on UNC folders, this eliminates it as a WHS solution, even though you can get it to run with the hack you mentioned.

To read all about tombstones, see the white paper on Drive Extender at download.microsoft.com/.../Windows_Home_Server_Drive_Extender.pdf

Open a cmd, type runas /user:machine\Adminuser "installer.exe /force" and you got it.

Eventuelly you must create the Key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\

     Windows\Installer\DisableMSI and set DWORD:0x00
