Does Live Mesh crash your Mac? Here’s the fix

Last week’s Live Mesh Service Update fixed a number of problems, including one that crashed Macs shortly after startup (ooh, hate that!). If you haven’t had the issue with your Mac, well it’s fixed now so you won’t have to bother with it. If however you were experiencing the problem, there are a couple of steps you need to take to get back in good order, according to a post on the Live Mesh forums:

Our recent Live Mesh for Mac update addressed a few issues that caused the Live Mesh for Mac software to shut down shortly after launching. If you have not encountered these problems, the new release will prevent it from occurring. If, however, you’ve experienced this problem, you will need to make sure you have the updated software installed (version number 0.9.3821.962 or later) and complete the steps below to fully resolve the issue:

Make sure that Live Mesh is not running on your Mac.

Run the “CleanKeychain” tool. To do this, right-click the Live Mesh application, click Show Package Contents, open the Contents folder, then the Resources folder, and then double-click CleanKeychain.

Open Finder and navigate to your Home folder. Open the Library Folder and then the Application Support folder. From the Application Support folder, move the “Live Mesh” folder to the Trash.

Remove your Mac from your mesh. To do this, go to www.mesh.com and sign in. On the Devices page, select your Mac, then in the Options drop-down menu, click Remove device from Live Mesh.

Run the new Live Mesh for Mac software on your Mac. Please note that you will have to sign in and add your Mac as a new device.

Sync folders again with your Mac.

How to check your Hotmail in Safari (3 or) 4

Ok so we’re a little addicted to Twitter Search, but we’ve seen a bunch of tweets on not being able to check Hotmail on Safari. There’s a fairly easy way to workaround the problem, so if you're trying out Safari 4 but miss being able to get to your Hotmail here’s how to do it.

Like a lot of other issues with Hotmail and non-IE browsers, you just need to change the User Agent string to fool Hotmail into thinking it is dealing with a browser it knows about. In Safari, this is pretty easy to do. As far as we can tell, however, Safari doesn’t remember the User Agent settings from session to session, so you would need to reset the User Agent for each new session that you want to check your Hotmail account.

First, open up Safari, and click on the “settings” icon (looks like a gear), and turn on the menu bar:

Then, from the same menu, click on Preferences, then Advanced:

...and check “Show Develop menu” at the bottom of the dialog box. This places a “Develop” menu item in the menu bar (you only need to set up the Develop menu once). From there, go down the list and choose “Opera 9.63 for Windows” (or Mac (??)):

Setting the User Agent string to Opera will allow you to use Hotmail normally in Safari 4, that is until you close the session. A lot of trouble? Maybe, but if you just want to check out Safari (it’s pretty dang fast) but need to get at your Hotmail, this little trick might be worth your while.

As to why you have to go to this extra trouble, we have no idea.

How To Enable Polygamy In Windows Live Messenger

Many of you will have several WLIDs, and want to sign into Messenger with more than one of them. Until now you had to seek refuge in a patch or add-on to be able to do so. Not anymore! Microsoft’s John Weisenfeld just shared a little trick with me to enable this, which I’m going to share with you.

The trick involves registry editing, so please follow these steps very carefully:

1. Start regedit (admin)
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Live
3. Right click Messenger and create a new DWORD called MultipleInstances

4. Right click the newly added registry key and choose Modify
5. Set the Value data to 1

6. Close regedit

All done! Now you can launch Windows Live Messenger as many times as you want, and sign in with as many WLIDs you want, on one computer. Just don’t try to sign in with the same WLID more than once on one computer or it will throw error 80071392 at you!
