Two new Windows Live services coming soon: Documents and Devices

Our friend Picturepan2 from LiveSino.net has discovered two new services coming soon to Windows Live Wave 4: Windows Live Documents and Windows Live Devices. Here’s a screenshot showing the two new services added to the header of an internal testing website:

Windows Live Documents and Devices

(Documents and Devices had been added to the header. Also notice that Events has been removed.)

It’s not hard to guess what Windows Live Documents will offer, considering that Office Live joined the Windows Live team at the beginning of this year. However, what will Windows Live Devices offer? Fortunately we were able to dig further and gained a preview of the homepage for Windows Live Devices, currently undergoing internal testing:

Windows Live Devices

Devices

While were weren’t able to add any “devices” to Windows Live, it appears that Windows Live Devices will come coupled with a downloadable counterpart – an updated Windows Live Sync that is much more similar to Live Mesh’s functionalities, that will also become part of Windows Live Essentials. Like Office Live, the Live Mesh team also recently joined the Windows Live group at the start of this year. Recall what Stephen Rose (Windows Sr. Community Manager) mentioned a few weeks ago telling us to “watch for more seamless integration between your desktops and mobile devices.” Could this be it? Or are there more coming?

It seems like Windows Live Wave 4 is well underway, and the consolidation of Office Live and Live Mesh with Windows Live could only make it better. So stay tuned at LiveSide as we bring you more from Windows Live Wave 4!

Update: Looks like SkyDrive will form the “Live Desktop” component for Windows Live Devices. Also, the mention of “digital photo frames” in the screenshot above suggests that we’ll see some integration with FrameIt?

If you think about it, none of these are new at all. One of them is Office Live and the other is Mesh. They're just getting a re-branding as they should.

My guess is that Windows Live Devices is going to be the unique place for Live Mesh devices as well as Sync folders, if these two services are merged. Windows Live Documents will be the successor of Office Live Workspace, with access to the web versions of Microsoft Office 2010 applications hosted at office.com.

Wave 4 appears to be well under-way now. I just hope these services aren't just there for the sake of it, and they actually become useful and well integrated.

I'm hoping for some news concerning Windows Live Messenger 2010 now!

From what I hear, Devices functionality (a subset of Mesh features) will surface to the end-user under Sync branding. Full LOE support is still a long ways off, possibly at Wave5 or beyond.

Although Windows Live Documents may indeed end up being the new OWA + Workspace brand, I'm being told the Office Live name will not be going away.

Expect to hear more soon on the "Midori" project and its relationship with LOE.

Wave 4 will be one heck of an upgrade I feel.  It just touches on so many things and we haven't even heard what the Live Mail team has slated.  I am very pleased to hear about how Live Mesh will potentially be integrated.  The name doesn't stay intact but its capabilities will carry on in Sync, Devices and SkyDrive.  But probably the unsung hero in Wave 4 will be Live Mesh Apps.  Can you imagine the visibility these apps will have alongside core Live services?  I can.  Though we may not see a App Store until Wave 5.

As a Office Live Small Business customer, I'm also extremely interested in what changes we may see.  I'm glad they acquired the Office.com domain.  I have seen and heard nothing about what changes are in store for OLSB users.  My top "Live integration" priority would be to allow OLSB Contacts be accessible From Live Mail.  Other than that I hope there are a number of service enhancements (1. Specify HTTPS option for select public facing web pages,  2. Be able to use Live Writer and 3. more web page component refinements).

Projecting a bit, my hope is that Wave 5 includes Live Video Messages..taking advantage of Silverlight 4 capabilities.  And that Office Live Small Business will finally be able to sync with Office 2010 Business Contact Manager.

In the same time, that means Mesh will be down to just a synchronizing solution ? IINM, earlier it’s supposed to be a platform right ?

Anyway, glad there’s already information to leak out for Wave 4. :D

@Seika, I wouldn't be surprised if you can remote your desktop from Live Devices depicted here.  We else is missing, "News", we'll see how that gets integrated.  But just because Live Mesh is being integrated more seamlessly into Live doesn't mean that the platform goes away or becomes less relevant.  I would strongly argue it will make the platform even more relevant.  Previously, you could only access them from within Live Mesh Desktop. It would be cool if developer created Apps could be accessible from within Live Photos for example.

any news on estimated date of roll out?

Only the Wave 4 desktop apps are anticipated. Live Photo Gallery has again fallen behind compared to iPhoto 09 and Picasa 3. Live Mail is a good desktop client but nowhere near the features provided by Google's web app, Gmail. Hotmail also is poor in terms of features. Messenger never really caught up with iChat. Movie Maker joins the group as the worst newcomer. Only Live Writer is a powerful app with a flourishing plugin ecosystem.

Will the 'devices' finally sync my live calendar and contacts with blackberry or is this only going to work with windows mobile phones?
