Windows Live Messenger upgrade available

A new update to Windows Live Messenger Version 2009 (build 14.0.8064.0206) will be offered over the next month as an optional upgrade, according to the Inside Windows Live Messenger blog, or you can upgrade to the latest version now, using the Windows Live Essentials installer.  No word  as to what changes have been made to the newest version (the current build of 2009 is 14.0.8050.1202).

Update After installing the update (running Win7 Beta), not only Messenger, but Mail, Photo Gallery, and Writer are also updated to 8064.0206.  A quick check shows that Win 7 still treats Messenger in the same "annoying" way, so it's back to running in Vista compatibility mode (see #28, thanks Tim!), at least for now.  Let us know in the comments if you find any changes.

Hello Kip,

I'm hearing simply "bug fixes and Windows 7 functionality" for info on this build. My best bet would be that the "Windows 7 functionality" is referring to the annoying implementation of the Messenger icon and the Superbar. If you're on the Windows 7 beta, you know exactly what I'm talking about: there's an extra, unnecessary, hidden window representing that you are still signed, even though the contacts list window is closed.

Hope that helps!

One of the new features they introduced in Messenger 2009 is still not working correctly. The ability to organize categories by status still does not work. It will only organize alphabetically regardless of which option you choose.

Hmm. Haven't noticed any changes here.

It appears as though they have decided Microsoft Update wasn't the way to go for WL apps. It's a shame because I really like the idea of having apps update through one central mechanism.

I can't install it, I get the following error:

oncatalogresult 0x80072ee6

Any idea ?

@IpEFiX: try an upgrade from http://download.live.com instead of applying the QFE patch. See if that works.

@mdsharpe, re: Windows Update, I think they'll be getting around to it.  But just in case, I sent some feedback on this.

Sorry to see that "Scenes" is still one of the most poorly executed customization attempts ever.

@hayes, how so?

@ damaster: it doesn't work either, I already tried it :(

Hmm, I'm very surprised the superbar functionality did not get fixed. I guess they're keeping that for Wave 4?
