Windows Live SkyDrive – what’s to come in the next update

SkyDrive We saw today that there’s a major announcement about Windows Live Wave 3 to be released across all services soon, and one of the updated service is Windows Live SkyDrive. The SkyDrive team were one of the first to post about what’s to come in the next update on their team blog, here’s a summary of what they say:

Increased Storage
- Upgraded from the current 5GB to 25 GB of online storage!

    File Organisation
    - Download photos directly to Windows Live Photo Gallery
    - Download as a .zip file Download an entire folder in one compressed file (initially available only in the United States, Denmark, and Ireland)
    - Move files between folders and support for copying files to multiple folders

SkyDrive 2

  • File Sharing
    - Share files and photos without requiring others to use Windows Live ID
    - Share files according to Categories or “Networks” in Windows Live People, instead of having to select individual contacts
    - Integrates with the new Windows Live Toolbar to share your Favorites with others (we mentioned earlier that Windows Live Favorites is being integrated into SkyDrive)
    - What’s New feed integration (more in depth about this later)

SkyDrive

Other Updates
- Comments with HTML support, new comment options, and spam control
- More supported countries and regions: Arabia, China, Hong Kong, Israel, South Africa, Vietnam and 13 new languages: Basque, Catalan, Guajarati, Hindi, Indonesian, Kannada, Malay, Malayalam, Marathi, Serbian-Cyrillic, Tamil, Telugu, and Vietnamese

As previously mentioned, we also see Windows Live Photos taken out of Spaces and integrated into SkyDrive. We will have a more comprehensive review on this later, but here’s a teaser of what’s to come:

  • Windows Live Photos
    -
    Bigger thumbnails than previous version
    - Order prints of your photos right from SkyDrive
    - New online slide show that works with any browser (although not required, but Silverlight is recommended to be installed for this)
    - People tags similar to Windows Live Photo Gallery, allowing you to tag your contacts – online!

Photo Slideshow

Excited? We sure are! Stay tuned at LiveSide as we cover more of the upcoming Wave 3 services in detail!

Can we finally upload whole folders?

Or do we have to do it by file still? :/

Will SkyDrive/Photos keep the normal tags an the people tags I added with Photo Gallery?

A feature that i would like to have at SkyDrive is a integration into Windows Exploer, but I think this will only appear if Skydrive once is integrated with Live Mesh. (I hope this will happen)

I don't have this.  When will everyone get it?

I can certainly understand why they're moving Photos to Skydrive, but I do have some reservations about this.

First, how will they handle uploads? Will one have to do it through SkyDrive, or can you still do it through the Spaces interface.

Second, will I still be able to have the Photos gadget on my Space? It looks pretty good there and gives visitors an easy way to quickly look at my photos.

Finally, and most importantly, will the restrictions on the number of photos we can upload be changed? As it stands, each Spaces user can upload 500 photos a month. I would prefer an unlimited number, but 500/month isn't a bad limit at all. Now that the Photos service is being moved to SkyDrive, will we be capped with a storage limit instead? I upload a lot of photos, which could add up to many gigabytes rather quickly, and I don't want to have to ever delete them. If these are counted towards my SkyDrive 25 GB limit, I could see this being a real problem. Although the current 500 photos is a limit, at least I can rest assured that I will always have more space is I just wait until the next month. So, my advice is to go with unlimited photo uploads, but if you can't do that, then keep the current system.

@apollo: Yes Photos will keep the tags (including photo tags) you've added in and uploaded from Photo Gallery.

@edkopp4: You can upload via Windows Live Photo Gallery too. And yes the photos gadget will still be available to you Space - I assume all your original uploaded photos on your existing Space will be migrated to SkyDrive/Photos.

And yes, although there are no limit on the numbers of photos you can upload each month, photo storage will be capped at SkyDrive's 25GB, but is this is expected to increase over time. And I agree with you it should have been the old way with unlimited storage.

In the mean time I guess we can always rescale all those 12megapixel photos down to a reasonable size for web viewing. But really, I have around 6000 photos in original resolution and it is still no way near 25GB, and I wouldn't be sharing all of them anyways.
