I don't know anyone who uses 'stationary'. But if I did I would probably think it's quite unprofessional, and a bit email 1.0.

Actually, it's "stationery", and it means "writing paper", pretty much - or at least it used to. In this context it means a background for your emails.

Yes, very strange about the body tag. It's also strange that it hasn't used CSS to set the background image.
