Live Mail to delete new @Live addresses?

In the Hotmail and Live Mail support blog today, it was hinted that the @Live accounts created with the javascript hack posted here on LiveSide (no longer working), on the Mail Support blog itself (in a comment) and on Mess.be and elsewhere may not survive long:

Because I don't want to get into the business of censoring comments, I did not delete the instructions for creating an @live.com account. @live.com accounts are not legitimately available anywhere except in the Netherlands, where we released Windows Live Mail (without the Beta) last week. If you created an @live.com account using the instructions below, it's quite likely the account will get blown away.

While it remains to be seen whether any action is taken against these newly created accounts (and for the record no action has been taken - so far - on accounts created from an earlier leak of a workaround to the @live address creation process), it's beyond us here at LiveSide why any such action would occur.

Windows Live fans (and at this point there are far too few of them), the ones who follow sites like LiveSide, should be rewarded for their enthusiasm, not punished.  If anything, Windows Live and Live Mail might want to review their security procedures, and take their lumps for what was at best a sloppy release.  If the addresses are revoked, it might well turn out to be a public relations nightmare, and anger Windows Live's biggest fans.  Classic case of two wrongs not making a right, if it were to happen.

Update: Kevin Briody from the Windows Live Marketing team confirmed this would not be happening - @Live addresses are safe.

GRRRR!  Ditto what Harrison said!  I just spent a lot of time switching over (including contacts, messenger, live desktop etc).  Doing this would hurt Windows Live's natural daily evangelist pool...those first movers that are most likely to recommend Windows Live!

Its as simple as this. Im a gmail user, but I got myself a nifty live address and I was about to transition over to live just based on my new live address. If it gets blown away then they can kiss this user goodbye.

If they applied any common sense they would realise the people that used the 'hack' (it was actually more of a balls up on the Live teams part) are the same people who would have been early adopters, these are the same people that probably give a lot of technical opinion to their friends and family. But heres a good plan, punish these same people for your technical mistake. If it gets blown away i'll be telling people to stay with gmail, simple.

I find it amusing that people are complaining about that they might lose an email address they acquired illegitimately by exploiting a javascript backdoor in the service. :P

Mostly because I'm bitter haha :D

The first glitch I knew of but didn't take advantage of it because it just seemed wrong. This time around I just didn't know, totally would've if I had seen it.

So it wasn't completely right...but hey, what is. Deleting @live adresses isn't a very bright move, those accounts belong to the few people that keep up with live apps.... I guess common sense isn't so common after all...

And I really liked my id :( ....*sigh*

Hi all-

We just wanted to update LiveSide's readers – We will NOT be revoking @live.com email addresses recently obtained by many of you. We love all the enthusiasm for Windows Live, and certainly don’t want to stamp down on it in any way.  We will however keep an eye out to make sure that accounts are not abused (for instance, if obtained by obvious spammers).

I'll watch this comment thread in case you have any questions!

Kevin can leave that here the majority of the readers of the LiveSide is not spammers. I for example use the hotmail since 1996;) Clearly that I had that to make another email later therefore I finished losing the password it my first email hotmail it. But in the case this new email of @live.com I go to start to use in the month that comes hehe has that to bring up to date my contacts and to divulge the new email. But the good one and that now I am super happy with mine @live.com, therefore already was using the Windows Live Mail Beta with my email of @msn.com and estav very satisfied. Of certain form I found that gmail.com better

Kevin for showing was valid that the Microsoft does not want to harm its image with the users who like its products \ services of Internet as @live.com, @msn.com and @hotmail.com, Windows Live Messenger and Windows Live Spaces Alone I wait the day that the Microsoft launches a better product that the Orkut. Ai when this to happen, I will be 100% Microsoft hehehe Because I only have the Gmail because of the Orkut. The Windows Live Spaces is very good, would have to improve the part to show the videos of the YouTube that not yet is good, does not function at least with me did not function since the first day that I tried until last week. If the Live Spaces to place a form to create communities, to have some improved things of the Orkut ai will be a site for social net of relationships perfect.

Mr. Briody

What will happen when the full system is rolled out and everybody who has a hotmail account will get the "option" to transfer their hotmail.com account to a live.com account? Are the honest people going to be the victim because somebody else registered their current hotmail account as live.com the illegal way? I don't think people will be so happy with that, especially not businesses who would like to keep their name.

What i see here is bad behaviour being rewarded..by allowing these accounts to be kept you are in fact giving an OK sign to those who were honest and didn't abuse the system this time to go abuse if the possibility arises again.
