Windows Live Hotmail Wave 3: What’s New

Thanks to some great work by tophtucker and then BV2312, we managed to catch the new Windows Live Hotmail promotion site as soon as it popped up today. What we love about this site is that it has gone public with some of the changes for Windows Live Hotmail that are coming up in the Wave 3 beta. Here's the summary: Speed: The coming soon page says that for broadband users, the new Hotmail will be up to 70% faster on sign in (50% for non-broadband users). That's a pretty big claim, and one which should provide for some interesting testing once the beta is open to the public. Ever-increasing

Office Live to launch in November, Office Online relaunch coming soon too

by Chris on 31 Oct 2006, 09:55 PM with 1 comment(s) and 2,398 views

Microsoft today announced, to a relatively large amount of fanfare, the release of Office Live on November 15th. The press release has all the facts, with Mary-Jo Foley providing some good analysis. The highlights are:

  • A change in the offerings, with a Premium level now being offered alongside Basic and Essentials
  • Increased storage across the packages, with upto 2GB of web storage available for Premium users
  • The inclusion of Microsoft Office Live adManager Beta, which works with Microsoft adCenter, to deliver and place subscribers’ keyword ads on Windows Live Search

Not content with merely regurgitating the press release, we've also learnt that Office Online is expected to be relaunched on November 13th, featuring advertising powered by MSN adCenter. With both Office Online and Office Live updating at the same time, the lack of web-based Office applications becomes even more apparent. With Ray Ozzie saying that they have no plans to launch a web-based Office suite "in the near future" we're looking at Office 14 to go some way in filling the void.

Virtual Earth update next week

by Chris on 31 Oct 2006, 09:44 AM with 4 comment(s) and 3,114 views

From the Virtual Earth (Mappoint) blog:

Please be advised that we will release a new version of the Virtual Earth Map Control on Tuesday, November 7th 2006.
...
Due to an upcoming marketing campaign surrounding this release we cannot elaborate on the exciting new features that will be in the release.  We will announce the features and details of this release on the launch date (November 7th).

We always like hearing the words "marketing campaign" as this imples they believe they have a product worth promoting, and therefore worth spending more money on. Though it is always open for interpretation about when a product is ready, the recent Live Search advertisement shows that Microsoft is getting it right so far for Windows Live.

Lets put this update up for discussion and find out what people would like to see in the update, and what they think might be coming from the Virtual Earth team. Brainstorming always produces some interesting and unexpected results!

Live Search to write new chapters, according to full page ads

by Kip Kniskern on 31 Oct 2006, 03:44 AM with 6 comment(s) and 3,038 views

Things are definitely heating up in Windows Live land, with new releases coming at a regular clip (and more to come, soon), and the marketing effort for the just released services coming on strong, too.  Full page ads are appearing in the US for Live Search, with a bit of an admission, as posted by Todd Bishop of the Seattle PI:

"Before we begin, let us state the obvious. We're late to the game. We admit it. But instead of shrugging our shoulders and becoming a footnote in search history, we've decided to write a few new chapters. Because, quite frankly, it's just the beginning."

Bishop posts a .pdf of the full page ad appearing in newspapers around the United States - part of which is shown here:

Windows Live and MSN Reorg

by Kip Kniskern on 30 Oct 2006, 04:15 PM with 5 comment(s) and 4,210 views

News is filtering out that Steve Sinofsky, Senior Vice President, Windows and Windows Live Engineering, is orchestrating another reorg at MSN and Windows Live. Focusing on consistency and improving products across the board (over incubation projects), the reorg aims to cut out middle management, and will divide Windows/Windows Live into six subgroups, down from the current eight. One of the new groups, named SDX (for Shared Data Experiences), will place the storage teams under Microsoft Max, the uber-photo sharing/data storage and manipulation project that is Windows Live in all but name only at this point.

Sinofsky, appointed in March 2006 to his current position as part of another reorg.

Messenger 8.1 to enter public beta next week?

by Chris on 28 Oct 2006, 05:04 PM with 2 comment(s) and 3,141 views

According to attendees of Windows Live Sessions (FR), Windows Live Messenger 8.1 will be entering public beta on ideas.live.com early next week, most likely Monday or Tuesday depending on your timezone.

For those who haven't been following the beta, the main changes currently included are:

  • Improved contact cards
  • Display picture stored online
  • Locations that can be configured to display in your personal status message

Messenger Add-Ins are a beta feature that should appear for the final Messenger 8.1 release, something we spoke with Ken Levy about when they first appeared during the Messenger 8.0 beta.

Updated: Sure enough it was released. See our follow up post for more details.

Windows Live increases staff by 40%

by Matthew on 27 Oct 2006, 05:36 PM with no comments and 2,556 views

Microsoft released earnings yesterday in a rise of 11 percent in revenue and operating income.  What's interesting, and both Todd Bishop and Mary Jo Foley point out, is that buried in the 10Q is the fact that online services profit fell because of a 40% increase in headcount, as well as data-center infrastructure costs.

OSB operating income decreased for the three months ended September 30, 2006, reflecting the decline in revenue, increased headcount-related costs primarily as a result of continued investments in Windows Live, adCenter, and other properties, and increased cost of revenue as a result of the build out of our data center infrastructure. Headcount-related costs increased 43%, reflecting both an increase in salaries and benefits for existing headcount and a 40% increase in headcount.

It's clear that Microsoft is taking a big interest in online services through MSN and Windows Live, both by the products and services they produce, and the financial statement as well.  Back in May for the MSN Strategic Account Summit, Ballmer mentioned the increase in spending to advertisers, clearly stating to them that Microsoft means business.

We will spend as a company overall about $6.2 billion in R&D. We have told our R&D folks that our number one priority, number one priority is software as a service, which really relates to this notion of the kinds of experiences that I talked about for the digital my style, if you will.

We're investing behind that very specifically though also in online. Our R&D spend just in our online MSN area has gone from a 500 million in our fiscal year '05 to a projected $1.1 billion in our fiscal year '07, which starts July 1. I think we surprised some in the financial community with some of this last week, and our stock showed that surprise, but our dedication and determination to invest in important ways in this business is strong. And we will invest as much in this online opportunity in R&D as any of the other big players in the market, let alone the rest of our $5.1 billion, the rest of the $6.2 billion total of R&D spend.

More highlights from the conference call:

Revenue for our Online Service business was down 4% to $539 million, with 5% advertising growth and a 30% decline in access revenue. Increased advertising revenue was driven by growth in display advertising, offset by lower search revenues. With respect to search, although our search queries grew, our search pricing was below the prior-year levels as a result of the transition to our new adCenter platform, which began in earnest during the December quarter. We experienced sequential growth in revenue per search as we increased the number of advertisers on our platform. During the quarter we also released a number of new or updated Internet services, including Live.com, Live Search, Live Local Search and Live Spaces.

We forecast revenue in the Online Services business to grow between 7% and 11% for the year and to be up 3% to 5% in quarter two. The full-year growth number implies significant year-over-year growth in the second half, based upon growth in both search and display advertising revenues. While we continue to make investments in various aspects of the business, we did make progress on a number of fronts in the quarter. For example, we rolled out the Live Search, which now powers searches on both MSN.com and Live.com, moved our Live Local Search out of beta and into final availability in both the U.S. and the UK, continued to grow and broaden our social networking presence with spaces and the recent beta rollout of Soapbox, and we're making good progress getting advertisers on adCenter, as well as looking at opportunities to extend our reach through partnerships.

It seems Microsoft is really committed to the online services business unit, and Ballmer is going to see to it.  With fierce competition from Google and Yahoo!, this is going to be a tough race, which leads to more innovation.

Windows Live Barcode launches

by Chris on 26 Oct 2006, 07:53 PM with 5 comment(s) and 7,766 views

No this isn't an April Fool's joke. Windows Live Barcode enables users to store their own data in QR codes, which are already present on Spaces for markets like Japan. From the homepage:

What is Windows Live Barcode
Windows Live Barcode is a set of services that transfer information between various media (PCs, billboards, magazines etc.) and handsets via Quick Response Code (QR Code), a two-dimensional barcode. It provides a new method for people to exchange information and enjoy various online services on handsets. Windows Live Barcode aims to enhance handset utility and provide you with more convenience and flexibility.

What is QR Code
The QR Code is a two-dimensional barcode. It contains a considerably greater volume of information in both vertical and horizontal directions than typical barcode in one dimension.

To see a demo, check out Aditya Bansod's blog, where he has created a business card encoded in QR code. Probably not a very useful service unless you are frequently in the Far East, but cool nevertheless!

"Microsoft Office Live...is going LIVE!", according to an email newsletter sent to beta testers, with the release expected as early as next week.  The website management offering (not, we repeat, an online version of Microsoft Office) provides domain name and email account personalization, web site traffic stats, online workspace, and a number of other features all in one set of packages, from the free (ad supported) Office Live Basics to Office Live Essentials, at $29.95/mo.

Some new features coming soon include the Office Live adManager tool, making it easy to purchase and manage keywords on Windows Live Search; one stop online management of account, contact, and business opportunity information; support for eBay sales, tracking, and payments through PayPal; and more space for your website and online workspaces, with more branded email and IM accounts.

Zack points today to the newly revamped Windows Live entry point: get.live.com - with an easier to navigate main page featuring the "orb", and categorizing the services.

Question is which is more impressive - that Windows Live services are being tied together in a coherent fashion, or that the MS designers are getting so good at Flash? Wink

Live Mail M8 available to all

by Chris on 21 Oct 2006, 12:29 AM with 2 comment(s) and 2,255 views

WLMail new icon.gif Ben Poon just posted over on the Windows Live Mail blog that the latest build (M8) is now available to all. It was originally released 2 weeks ago as part of a gradual roll out to the service's 9million users, presumably in an effort to avoid some of the glitches that were experienced with the M6 release.

Impressions of the new build have been extremely favourable, especially concerning the improved performance that many users are seeing. With Live Mail now approaching v1 status, we'll hopefully soon see the availability of @live.com addresses.

Amazon launches QnA rival

by Chris on 19 Oct 2006, 10:29 PM with 3 comment(s) and 2,893 views

If you were in any doubt as to which way most of the big internet portals think search is going, Amazon has made it crystal clear; Askville, Amazon's new social search service, has launched into beta in competition with the likes of Yahoo Answers and Windows Live QnA. Since South Korean search engine Naver first showed the way to dethroning Google, social search has become a key battleground.

Cameron Marlow notes the main differences between Askville and the existing sites:

"Probably the most significant change is the flow of the question/answering exchange. In Yahoo! Answers, and elsewhere, answers are shown publicly as they are received; in Askville, answers are hidden to the public until 5 answers have been received. Any discussion or clarification can happen in a public message board attached to the question. After 5 answers have been collected, the group of asker and answerers vote and the whole thing is made public.

Askville rewards users with “coins,” a virtual currency that will be redeemable in another community named Questville slated for release in early 2007."

The most notable advantage Askville has over Windows Live QnA is the presence of a rewards system - not many people choose to work for free, which is why a Live Points system is a urgent requirement for QnA. Gold stars can only encourage users so much.

With Amazon's S3 taking the initiative over the yet to be released Live Drive, it will be interesting to see how Askville does against the more established QnA.

Cameron also has some Askville beta invites :)
